The state government of Tamil Nadu has launched “Free Set Top Box Scheme” for TV subscribers in the state. The objective of the scheme is to provide high quality cable connection at affordable cost to all the households in Tamilnadu.
The free set top box scheme will be operated by the government owned Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (Arasu Cable). The same company will also manufacture the set top boxes. The distribution process of set top boxes will be completed within three months. The cable service in set top boxes will be rolled out through Digital Addressable System (ADS).
The distribution of set top boxes will reach to customers through the local cable operators. These operators will be managed from a control center in Chennai.
Highlights of Tamilnadu Free Set Top Box Scheme :
- The subscriber has to pay only one time activation fee of Rs. 200.
- The warranty period of the Set Top Box will be three year.
- The subscriber will get access to nearly 180 channels in digital mode on set top box.
- The subscriber will get four packages with monthly subscription like Rs. 125, Rs. 175, Rs. 225 and Rs. 275 with options of channels.
Moreover, the state government also has launched MPEG 4 upgraded control room for digital signal transmission. As per the notification, nearly 70 lakh subscribers has been registered with Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV). These subscriber has been managed by local cable operators across the State.
This is the first time in country that a state government – run cable TV operator has been issued license to deliver digital cable channels at low cost by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
